How Long Does It Take to Climb Everest?

A guided Everest expedition takes six to nine weeks from landing in Kathmandu to flying home, and about 40 of those days are spent below the summit acclimatizing or waiting on weather. Madison Mountaineering's published schedule shows the standard shape: Base Camp on Day 10, two acclimatization rotations through Day 25, rest and weather evaluation to Day 31, the summit push leaving Base Camp on Day 32, the summit attempt on Day 37, contingency days held to Day 49. The climbing part is short. From Camp IV on the South Col at 7,906 m to the 8,848.86 m summit takes 6 to 12 hours, and 15 to 17 hours round trip back to Camp IV.

What a 42-day schedule actually contains

I administer brackets and match records. The error I correct most often is a player reporting the winner and omitting the game count, which is the number the next tiebreak runs on. "About two months" is that report. Probably true, and not usable, because it is the sum of eight blocks that move independently, and the block deciding whether you summit is the one you have no say over.

I learned that expensively. At a 96-entrant event early on I logged pool results as winners only. Three players finished 2-1 in one pool, the tiebreak ran on game differential, and I did not have it. One of them had already left. I rebuilt two sets from player agreement, seeded off that, and someone who should have advanced did not. I have recorded every match by games since.

The divergence between operators shows what those days buy. Alpine Ascents International adds four to six days of acclimatizing once clients reach Base Camp and sends every team up Lobuche East, partly to cut trips through the Khumbu Icefall. Alpenglow Expeditions sells a 36-day north-side ascent to clients who pre-acclimatize in hypoxic tents before flying, and Alpine Ascents offers that trade as a Speed Ascent removing 12 days.

Why acclimatization rotations take three weeks

Above roughly 8,000 m the body stops adapting and starts consuming itself, so the adaptation has to be banked lower. Base Camp at 5,364 m already delivers about half the oxygen available at sea level, and the second rotation pushes climbers onto the Lhotse Face near 7,200 m before sending them back down to sleep low. Red blood cell mass answers in weeks, not days.

The payoff shows in the Himalayan Database. Alan Arnette's compilation, current through December 2025, records 13,737 summits against a 43% success rate above Base Camp and 339 deaths, about 1.06 per 100 summits. Split by gas, success runs 80% with supplemental oxygen and 4% without. Three weeks of rotations plus bottled oxygen is the distance between those two numbers.

I have never been on a glacier, let alone at 8,000 m. I cannot tell you what a second rotation costs a body, whether six hours or twelve is the honest figure for you above the South Col, or how a person recognises they are finished. No records file answers that. What I can check is whether a published number has documentation behind it, which matters here more than I expected it to.

How long the summit day takes

Teams leave Camp IV between 8 p.m. and midnight and aim to stand on top between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. Operators quote 6 to 12 hours for the 942 vertical metres from the South Col past the Balcony, the South Summit and the Hillary Step, and 15 to 17 hours round trip. The spread is wide because distance is not the variable. Speed at one third of sea-level pressure is, along with how many people are ahead of you on one fixed rope.

Camp IV is the one place on the route where waiting is itself the danger. Climbers get about three days on the South Col to make a bid and rarely get a second trip up there. That is what turns a 42-day schedule into a single decision.

Everest runs a hard time cap, the 2 p.m. rule, the one feature of this mountain that reads like something from my own work. Not on the summit by 2 p.m., you turn around. On 10 May 1996 Rob Hall's Adventure Consultants team set that deadline, then lost over an hour above 28,000 ft because fixed ropes at the Hillary Step had not been placed. Several climbers summited late, Hall among them at 2:30 p.m. Eight died across 10 and 11 May. The deadline was advisory before that season and effectively mandatory after.

How many summit days a season actually gives you

The summit sits at the working elevation of the jet stream, so winds across the top exceed 80 mph for most of the year and hold between 100 and 175 mph when the jet is parked overhead. In May the developing monsoon shoves it north. Everestweather.com, which forecasts for the jet rather than for generic mountain conditions, puts the usable period at three to five days of reasonable winds somewhere in the final two weeks of May. Broader estimates stretch to 10 or 14 days of reduced wind, but the calm days are the tight number. The most successful summit dates fall between 15 and 25 May, and spring produces around 85% of all Everest summits.

Forty days of work buy a place in a queue three to five days long.

The fastest ascent on record, and what it is not

On 27 May 2026 Tyler Andrews left Base Camp at 7:11 p.m. and stood on the summit at 5:06 a.m., an ascent of 9 hours 55 minutes 43 seconds. He was back at Base Camp by 11:44 a.m., a round trip of 16 hours 32 minutes 51 seconds. His Garmin file, published on Strava, logs 28.97 km and 3,821 m of gain. He broke Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa's 10:56:46 from 2003. Both men used supplemental oxygen, Andrews from Camp 2. It was his eighth attempt across three expeditions and two years. His original target stayed out of reach: Kaji Sherpa's 1998 no-oxygen mark of 20 hours 24 minutes still stands.

Until 2019 the number I handed people was 8 hours 10 minutes, Pemba Dorje Sherpa's claimed ascent of 21 May 2004, confirmed by Nepal's tourism ministry in September 2005 and carried by Guinness for thirteen years. I dropped it after reading what Nepal's Supreme Court said in quashing that recognition in November 2017. No liaison officer's report. No photographs. No witnesses, because he climbed alone that day. Only the start time at Base Camp was documented. The Department of Tourism struck the record in November 2018. I have no idea whether the ascent happened. I know the file could not carry it, and a result I cannot rebuild from documentation is not one I will seed anything with.

Andrews' mark is the one I use now, because the paperwork exists: a GPS track, an entry on Fastest Known Time, witnesses from Asian Trekking, and filings with the Himalayan Database and the Ministry of Tourism. He has said plainly that no single body declares an official Everest record with an official starting line, which is why his team certified through three of them. His press release puts Base Camp at 5,320 m; the standard reference figure is 5,364 m, and the Khumbu Glacier shifts the camp year to year. Forty-four metres cannot threaten a record won by an hour, but it would decide a tiebreak in my world.

Can Everest be climbed in a week?

The strongest case against everything above is that four men did it in under five days, and I cannot argue that away. Garth Miller, Alistair Carns, Anthony Stazicker and Kevin Godlington left London on the afternoon of 16 May 2025 and summited at roughly 7:15 a.m. on 21 May, on an expedition organised by Lukas Furtenbach. They had slept in hypoxic tents for weeks, and on 5 May, lightly sedated at a German clinic, they breathed a low dose of xenon mixed with oxygen for under an hour. Helicopters replaced the trek. Nepal's tourism department opened an inquiry; Carns answered that the xenon went in on German soil, sixteen days before the summit.

Concede the true part. A real slice of a 42-day itinerary is commercial scheduling rather than physiology: clients batched into teams, contingency days most people never spend, queues on shared fixed ropes, a trek in that survives partly because it sells well. Operators arguing that the standard calendar exceeds what biology requires have a point, and Furtenbach has been making it for years.

What did not compress is the acclimatization. It relocated. The tents ran for weeks at home, the xenon preceded the summit by more than a fortnight, and only the Nepal-side portion shrank. A week on the mountain is real and purchasable. A week from a standing start is not.

What the timeline costs in permits and paperwork

Nepal raised the spring Everest royalty from $11,000 to $15,000 per climber on 1 September 2025, its first change since 2015, when the country replaced expedition-based fees with a flat per-person charge. Autumn moved from $5,500 to $7,500, winter and monsoon from $2,750 to $3,750. Spring costs the most and delivers most of the summits, so the fee schedule and the weather window point at the same six weeks.

The same package changed more than price. Nepal now requires one guide for every two foreign climbers above 8,000 m, medical certificates issued within a month, a non-refundable garbage fee replacing the old $4,000 refundable deposit, and summit documentation filed within three months. A proposal to require a prior 7,000 m Nepali peak was still in committee as of September 2025.

That three-month filing deadline is the line I would highlight. Results not submitted by the deadline do not exist, and I have watched players lose placements to that principle where the prize was a plastic trophy.

Money follows the calendar. Alan Arnette's 2026 price survey puts the median at $45,250 with a Nepali operator on the south side, $54,000 with an international operator using Sherpa guides, $76,000 with an international guide, and $90,800 on the Tibet side. Most climbers pay between $40,000 and $80,000, and Madison Mountaineering lists its 42-day expedition at $79,500. The permit is roughly a fifth of the cheapest realistic total, a useful check on anyone quoting the permit as the cost.
